Raised by young, adventure-seeking parents, Laely Heron spent her childhood literally moving around the world. Her father was a mining engineer and adventurer, so when a business opportunity arose in Algeria, the family, including Laely’s sister Aimee, moved to Africa. After a few years in North Africa, they hit the road, traveling first throughout southern Africa in a Volkswagen bus, and later backpacking their way through Madagascar, Mauritius, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. This unconventional childhood opened Laely’s mind and palate, eventually leading her to Bordeaux to study oenology. With this passion for wine and an entrepreneurial spirit, Laely started Heron Wines in 1994 with a “business plan” sketched out on a napkin, and an idea to make great and affordable wine.
The grapes are sourced within two appellations. The base is from Rutherford in the Napa Valley well known for producing quality Cabernet and Merlot. To soften the massive tannins from Rutherford, we source Merlot from the cool inland climate of Mendocino, from which much of the soft cherry fruit comes. The wine is aged in 1, 2 and 3 year old Saury French oak barrels for a period of 12 months.
