Crossbarn winery was founded in 2000 by Paul Hobbs to honor his family’s farming heritage. With a commitment to sustainable vineyard practices and gentle winemaking techniques, Crossbarn wines offer a pure and youthful expression of fruit blended from diverse vineyards within California’s finest appellations. 

Located in a former apple processing facility in Sebastopol, California, Crossbarn wines are made with labor-intensive, yet simple techniques. The team harvests fruit at night by hand, sort by the berry or cluster, ferment each vineyard separately, and age wine using a combination of stainless steel and low percentages of new oak. For more than 20 years the focus has been to express California’s most esteemed appellations with authenticity by upholding the fresh, vibrant and lingering flavor attributes from each region to craft wines of stunning quality and exceptional value.

Sourced from carefully selected vineyards within the cool Sonoma Coast for chardonnay and pinot noir, and Sonoma County and Napa Valley for cabernet sauvignon, Crossbarn is committed to cultivating sites that share our core values of sustainability to ensure the highest quality fruit at harvest. 


Stretching from San Pablo Bay all the way up to the Mendocino line, the Sonoma Coast American Viticulture Area (AVA) covers over 480,000 acres, with roughly 7,000 acres planted with vines.

We harvest chardonnay and pinot noir fruit primarily from the western part of the appellation, where distinct maritime influences allow for notably cooler average temperatures influenced by coastal wind and fog. Growing grapes in these dramatically cool corners of Sonoma County is complex and demanding, with the end result truly worth the risk. The resulting fruit produces wines that are elegant and intensely structured. 


Sonoma County stretches from the Pacific Coast in the west to the Mayacamas Mountains in the east, and is home to almost 60,000 acres of vineyards. Within the borders are 18 AVAs, each with its own distinctive characteristics.

We source from select vineyard sites in the Alexander Valley and Moon Mountain districts for our Sonoma County cabernet sauvignon. In each of these sub-appellations, plentiful sunshine and well-drained soils produce elegant and intensely structured wines.


Although the land mass of Napa Valley is only 30 miles long and only a few miles wide, the region is incredibly diverse, with 33 distinct series of soils and wide range of microclimates. Situated between the Mayacamas Mountain Range to the west and Vaca Mountains to the east, the region enjoys a Mediterranean climate bringing sunny, warm days followed by cool evenings, allowing grapes to ripen slowly. The appellation’s proximity to the San Pablo Bay allows for cool ocean air to be funneled up the valley from the south, which helps to moderate temperatures, allowing for a range of microclimates from the cooler southern appellations to the warmer northern end of the valley.

Taking advantage of this diversity in both climate and terroir, we source from a number of vineyards ranging from the north to the south of this famed appellation in order to capture the range of complexity in cabernet sauvignon fruit from the region.
