"A blend of Champoux (62%), Sagemoor (26%) and Woodward Canyon (12%) estate vineyards, this wine is aromatically brooding at present, with notes of coffee, toffee and vanilla bean alongside high-toned cherries, dried herbs and flowers. The palate is supremely rich, dense and layered, with milk chocolate, coffee and cherry flavors. Tannins are expertly managed and the wine brings plenty of textural appeal, combining richness and elegance. The barrel notes are primary now, so give them time to integrate." –July 2015
"DOUBLE GOLD MEDAL: Proprietor Rick Small skipped the 2010 vintage of his Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon; it was the first time he hadn't bottled his reserve-level Cab since launching Woodward Canyon in 1981. He did it because he didn't think the wine was quite good enough. That's a move that takes guts and integrity - qualities that define Small's character. This new release from Woodward Canyon is a stunner that should make Small and winemaker Kevin Mott proud. It opens with aromas of sweet spices, cherry pipe tobacco and ripe boysenberry. On the palate, it reveals flavors of black cherry, plum sauce and sautéed mushrooms. It is impeccably balanced through the lengthy and memorable finish."
This “Old Vines” Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from grapes that were
planted in the early 1970’s. Hand-harvested grapes are fermented in 2000 liter stainless steel tanks and punched down two times per day.
Average fermentation occurs between seven and ten days. After pressing and racking, the various lots
are moved to new French barrels for aging and maturation. In late summer, the wine is
racked from barrel, assembled and bottled mid-August.
