Vinous Media Tyler Winery, 2013 Tyler Chardonnay 'W' Block Bien Nacido
"The 2013 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard - W Block is one of the most intriguing wines in the Tyler range. Wonderfully delineated, and nuanced, the 2013 is all about precision. A slightly Burgundian-inflected note of reduction accompanies the green pear, slate and crushed rock nuances. All the elements come together nicely in this very pretty Chardonnay from Tyler." –Jun-15
"Coming from what Justin considers the top block, the 2013 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Block W has lots of marine-like oyster shell, white flowers, apple and mint to go with a steely, structured and racy vibe on the palate. I like its density and structure, but it's firm and backwards now, with its acidity front and center. Give it a year or so to put on some weight and drink bottles through 2023."

From the eastern edge of the Bien Nacido property, the vines grow in the most shale laden gravel soils. These well-drained, mineral soils along with the fact that the vines were planted on their own roots back in 1973 always produce the most powerful chardonnay. (176 cases)
The 2013 vintage was an ideal growing season. Spring frost was minimal with warm temperatures throughout the summer allowing the vines to set a beautiful crop and ripen it efficiently. Once harvest began, it was extremely intense and compressed. The warm temperatures throughout the growing season enabled the vines to compress their ripening and what normally became ripe over four weeks was ripe in two.
