Terre Rouge, 2012 Terre Rouge Syrah 'Les Cote de L'Ouest'

"A bold but well-behaved wine, this is spicy and meaty in aroma, generously layered with flavors of black plums, blackberries and incredibly velvety tannins. The way that the core of delicious fruit is shrouded in thick but soft tannins and threaded with acidity is a marvel. ItÄôs tempting to drink now but lay it down until 2018 if possible. -Jim Gordon"

Terre Rouge

96% Syrah
4% Viognier

The Terre Rouge team chose two sites for this blend due to the impeccable vineyard management and flavor compatibility.

60% of this wine is made from fruit grown at a superb vineyard site that is planted in the hills west of the Amador County line, just a few miles from the Mokelumne River in Clements Hills. The soils consist of alluvium granite rock (Monpellier and Cometa), and the climate is moderated by Delta cooling. Tight spacing, vertical trellising and upward shoot positioning give the fruit maximum sun exposure to promote full flavor development.

40% of the blend comes from mountain Syrah grown at several other sites consisting of a variety of volcanic and granite-based soil series that develop grapes with small cluster morphology.

Viognier is co-fermented with the Syrah grapes. The grapes are lightly crushed and fermented in larger tanks and irrigated to minimize tannin extraction and aged 17 months in 20% new and 80% used French oak barrels.
