Torbreck Wines, 2010 Torbreck 'The Pict' Mataro

"Medium to deep garnet with a hint of purple to the color, the 2010 The Pict is a 100% Mataro (Mourvedre) wine redolent of underbrush, dusty earth and dried herbs over a core of stewed plums, blackberry preserves and mulberries with a touch of aniseed. Decidedly full-bodied, this brute of a wine is packed with earthy, meaty flavors all encased by medium to firm levels of chewy tannins before finishing long. (94+)"

"Supple and generous, plush in texture, with cassis and kirsch overtones to the black cherry and meaty flavors, hinting at exotic spice on the finish."

Torbreck Wines

The wild, rugged, and earthen aromas typically associated with the Bandol region of France provide the basis for this powerful single vineyard Mataro (aka Mourvedre), which is sourced from the Materne ‘Quarry Block’ Vineyard, in Northern Greenlock, planted in 1927. The juice was racked into new French barriques where it completed a slow malolactic fermentation and was aged for two years. The best barrels were later assembled and the wine was bottled without filtration or fining. Fresh soil, tree bark, cassis and leather dominate the nose with hints of spice, chocolate and drying meats evolving with time in the glass. The expansive palate is rich and dense with a rustic core of earth, tar and black olive all tightly framed by the wines mineral strewn tannins.
