2013 Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese
Vinous Robert Weil, 2013 Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese
"Enticing aromas of white peach, sweet lime and lemon cress. Succulent nectarine fruit is animated by vibrant, salty minerality. The deep, spicy finish is both alluring and cerebral. In its balance, this is perhaps the purest expression of the 2013 vintage at this estate." –April 2015

"This needs a day of air to sort itself out, the intensity of the acidity and the fruit initially competing for attention. With time, the two meld into ripe melon and candied grapefruit flavors invigorated by electric acidity. There's an unusual earthiness underneath it all, a white mushroom aspect that suggests pairing this with a porcini-laden pork chop." –Dec 2014

The outstanding quality of the Gräfenberg (“hill of the counts”) site was first documented in the late 12th century. It is a steep, southwest-facing slope in a sheltered side valley, with deep to medium-deep stony soil made up of phyllite interspersed with water-retaining layers of loess and loam. Yields are very low, resulting in wines with extraordinary concentration. The Spätlese (“late picked”) from Kiedrich Gräfenberg is a wonderful example of this.
