"A little closed at this youthful stage, the 2014 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard offers subtle honeyed peach, pineapple and passion fruit notes with touches of baking bread and cashews. The palate delivers the goods, packed with rich tropical fruit characters and a toasty/cedary undercurrent, framed by lively acidity and finishing long, with some spices coming through." –Mar-17
"One of flagships in David Ramey's range, the 2014 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is also one of the creamier, richer wines in this range. Stone fruit, mint, butter and light French oak notes give the wine its voluptuous, racy personality and oily feel. There is plenty of freshness and nuance to play off the fruit. As with all of these wines, though, the Hyde is less exuberant than in the past."
Hyde Vineyard is situated on gently rolling slopes of the Carneros District, on the Napa side. Summer temperatures are kept relatively cool by marine air flowing through the Petaluma Gap. Ancient creek beds provide drainage and add a scattering of rocks.
The soils are quite heavy Haire Clay Loam about 30 inches deep with impenetrable clay subsoil which limits vine vigor and crop yield.
Grapes are whole-cluster pressed for phenolic delicacy. Native-yeast and full native
malolactic fermentation take place in barrel, with sur lies bâtonnage. Aging After aging 18 months in 30% new François Frères French oak barrels, the
Chardonnay is fined and settled in tank. It is then bottled without filtration. (1160 cases)
