Ramey Wine Cellars, 2013 Ramey Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard

"The 2013 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is one of the richest, most powerful Chardonnays in the range. Here it is the wine's phenolic and sense of vertical structure that stand out most. Even with all of its obvious richness and heft, the Hyde preserves remarkable freshness. Dried herbs, orange peel and buttery notes add nuance on the large-scaled, ample finish."

"Less oaky than the 2014 but showing sexy clove and cinnamon notes to go with the brighter lemon curd. Wonderfully fine-grained and glyceral yet light on its feet, offering adamantly dry, penetrating, youthfully tight flavors of lemon, orange zest, dried herbs, brown spices and salty minerality. Brisk, lemony and long on the aftertaste. This wine is extremely dry at 0.41 grams per liter residual sugar, but Ramey notes that all of these vintages finished below one gram. Splendid California Chardonnay with the structure for a graceful evolution in bottle."

Ramey Wine Cellars, 2013 Ramey Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard

"A classy example of sleek, Burgundian Chardonnay, this is trim, with lively acidity and a zesty offering of tangerine, citrus, tart white peach and subtle oak. Charming now but built to age, this will likely be better by 2017. Sails along on the finish. Drink now through 2021. 1,160 cases made."

2013 Ramey Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard
Ramey Wine Cellars

100% Chardonnay

Hyde Vineyard is situated on gently rolling slopes of the Carneros District, on the Napa side. Summer temperatures are kept relatively cool by marine air flowing through the Petaluma Gap. Ancient creek beds provide drainage and add a scattering of rocks.

The soils are quite heavy Haire Clay Loam about 30 inches deep with impenetrable clay subsoil which limits vine vigor and crop yield.

Grapes are whole-cluster pressed for phenolic delicacy. Native-yeast and full native malolactic fermentation take place in barrel, with sur lies bâtonnage. Aging After aging 18 months in 30% new François Frères French oak barrels, the Chardonnay is fined and settled in tank. It is then bottled without filtration. (1160 cases)

2013 Vintage
2013 summed up to be a perfect vintage with clear sunny days and cool evenings. This produced a long, moderate growing season with extended hang time and even ripening, resulting in a full range of flavors while retaining natural acidity.
