Rhys Vineyards

VINEYARD: Family Farm Vineyard is the result of special partnership between neighbors. Realizing the potential of its loamy clay soil and eastern aspect, the Sletten, Martin, Sullivan and Harvey families decided to convert this former Christmas tree farm into a vineyard in 2002. The weather is very similar to Rhys' 'Home' Vineyard, while the alluvial sand and clay soils are unique. Like many of the best vineyards in Burgundy, the East-facing aspect shelters the vines from the warmer afternoon sun, allowing the grapes to retain freshness and aromatic dimension. 400 ft Elevation.

VINIFICATION: No crushing even for de-stemmed lots. One or two ton fermenters, mix of oak and steel - cold soak at 50 degrees F for five days, gradually ramp up of temp, mid-70’s F ferment temp, peaks at 85-88 degrees F - All foot trodden, twice a day down to 5 Brix and then once a day to dryness. Goes dry on skins after 10-14 days, pressed off into barrel with lees, on gross lees for 12 months - rack off lees in tank to put blends together, when blends are assembled, back to barrel, then bottled after 17-18 months total elevage.

- Ages in high quality, tightly-grained Francois Freres custom barrels, 4 yr seasoning, med to med+ toast, 30% new;
- 50% whole cluster;
- 35 barrels(225L) produced;
- No additions of acid, water, tannins, yeasts or anything else but a little sulfur;
- The wine is never pumped, fined, or filtered.
