Rhys Vineyards, 2012 Rhys Chardonnay Horseshoe Ranch

"Rich, oily and viscous on the palate, the 2014 Chardonnay Horseshoe Vineyard is all about texture. Orange blossoms, mint, honey, apricot jam, butter and spices meld into the racy, voluptuous finish as the 2012 shows off its class and exuberant personality. A slight element of Burgundian-inflected reduction lingers on the close. If opened young, the 2012 needs a lot of air, but ideally readers should be prepared to cellar this gem for at least a few years."

VINEYARD: Planted in 2004 with a total of 17.5 acres, Horseshoe Ranch is less than 1/2 mile from Alpine vineyard, but they are different in many ways. The ridge between the vineyards protects Horseshoe from some of the direct ocean influence but allows for similarly cool temperatures. More importantly, Horseshoe lies on a ridge of sedimentary shale called Monterey formation that has made its way to surface over the millenia. This lightweight, brittle rust-mottled shale is prevalent throughout the surface and soil providing for low vigor and outstanding drainage. Elevation is 1450-1500ft.

VINIFICATION: Whole cluster press (oxidatively) and juice rack overnight for several hours. From tank into 20% new French Oak, custom made Damy barriques (3 yr seasoning, light toast) for extra tight grain. The wines take about a year to go dry. No inoculation for either primary or malolactic fermentation. No racking nor battonage. Wine then goes into tank with the gross lees for an additional 4-6 months before bottling. No stirring in tank.
