Quinta do Vesuvio, 2011 Quinta do Vesuvio 'Pombal do Vesuvio'

"BEST BUY - Vesuvio is a grand quinta just upriver from the Cachao da Valeira, a waterfall, now dammed, that separates the Cima Corgo from the Douro Superior. Pombal is the quinta's less ambitious wine, and it's a beauty in 2011, the dense blanket of its ripe flavors needing a day of air to lift, revealing scents of game, herbs and schist. The layers and depths of the wine feel cool, lasting on a breath of schist minerality."

VINTAGE: 2011 was an exceptional year in the Douro Valley. The 2010/2011 winter was wet, which built up the underground water reserves that are critical at each stage of the vine ́s growth cycle. The spring was very warm and dry. However, a relatively mild summer, with some rain in late August and early September, attenuated the effect of the drought and helped the vines to ripen their fruit perfectly. A period of good weather followed for almost two months, creating the ideal harvest conditions and leading to the prediction that great wines would be made that year.

The grapes are hand picked and transported in 20 Kg boxes to the winery, where vinification takes place in gravity flow fermenters. After going through a rigorous triage process, including bunch and berry selection, the berries are transferred to the fermentation tanks and delicately crushed. After inoculation with selected yeast, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation is induced with a frozen culture of lactic acid bacteria prior to aging in barrel. The wine is aged 5 months in stainless and 11 months in 400 liter French oak barrels.
