Peter Michael Winery, 2013 Peter Michael Chardonnay Belle Côte Estate

"The 2013 Chardonnay Belle Côte, which I had tentatively rated 95 to 97, has turned out to be flirting with perfection. Production was nearly 1,000 cases less than the 2014! Displaying an almost stony liqueur of rocks, lemon butter, and white peach, this is a full-bodied, intense wine with loads of tangerine oil, pineapple jam and that wet stone minerality that runs through it. This extremely massive, rich, super-concentrated wine blew me away in my tasting at the winery. Drink it over the next decade. -RP"

Belle Côte Vineyard
Planted: 1990
Elevation: 1,700–1,800 feet
Soil: Volcanic-origin Rhyolite

As the oldest of the four Peter Michael estate Chardonnay vineyards, Belle Côte exemplifies how consistently these mountain vineyard sites produce exceptionally high quality Chardonnay. Given the naturally cool climate of Belle Côte Vineyard's high elevation and the fact that the site is sheltered from the hot afternoon sun by its southeastern exposure and a stand of trees on its western border, the vines are exceptionally slow to ripen. For this site, the growing season typically extends into October (two to three weeks longer than most Chardonnay vineyards in Napa and Sonoma counties).

The fruit undergoes native yeast fermentation, is 100% barrel-fermented in French oak from artisan coopers and barrel-aged sur lies 11 months with weekly bâtonnage. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
