"I always love the two blockbuster Syrahs from this estate, both of which need to be sought out by readers. Tons of black olive, smoked and salted meats, as well as ripe dark fruits all emerge from the incredibly polished, elegant and layered 2014 Syrah Estate, which is just an off the hook value. Inky colored, layered, yet graceful and light on its feet, with gorgeous fruit, drink this beauty over the coming 4-5 years, although I wouldn't be surprised to see it evolve for longer." –Aug-16
"Melville's 2014 Syrah Estate is aromatic and lifted in style, with distinct Pinot inflections, which I suppose is not much of a surprise. Blueberry, lavender, white pepper and menthol are all nicely delineated in this attractive, mid-weight Syrah. The 40% whole clusters are not especially evident, but are felt mostly texturally rather than in the wine's flavor profile."
The fruit for this wine comes exclusively from the Sta. Rita Hills estate and is a combination of
two different Syrah clones (Estrella and Clone 99). The Estrella is from Donna’s block which is
planted on well drained, nutrient deficient sand. The neutrality of this soil always lends an
intoxicating and high toned bouquet of flowers and spice to the wine. The Clone 99 from Block I is
planted on denser sandy loam soil, bringing depth and richness to the resultant wine.
70% of the fruit is gently de-stemmed with 30% remaining as whole clusters. It is fermented in small 1.5 ton open top fermenters. Total skin and stem contact averaged 30 days (7 day cold soak, 2+ weeks fermentation and 1+ week extended maceration). From the press, the wine is transferred directly to neutral barrels (5-20 year old French oak) where it remains sur lie with no sulfur until May when it is gently pressure racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in August.
