"(36% new oak): Brilliant ruby-red. Highly fragrant, smoke-accented aromas of black raspberry, cherry cola and anise, with a sexy potpourri quality building with air. Juicy red berry flavors provide excellent palate coverage, gaining depth and sweetness in the glass. Densely packed but lively too, showing zero excess fat. Finishes long and spicy, with fine-grained tannins and lingering berry and floral pastille notes." –Dec 2014
"Mostly from the slopes of La Encantada, one of the cooler vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills, supported by fruit from John Sebastiano and Zotovich, this is tightly wound up at first, building toward a fragrant scent of violet pastilles with air. Silky tannins allow coastal acidity to drive the wine, the overall impression one of brightness and lift."
Sta. Rita Hills – La Encantada Vineyard (64%), John Sebastiano Vineyard (27%), & Zodovich Family Vineyard (9%)
The fruit was hand-sorted, 30% whole cluster, 6-10 day cold soak, natural (wild) fermentation, only free-run wine used, no SO2 during maturation on full lees, bottled unfined and unfiltered. The finished wine matured for 10 months in roughly one-third parts new, one-year, and third year French oak barriques from Tonnellerie Françoise Frères and Tonnellerie Ermitage.
