"Isole e Olena's 2006 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, a wine that was originally produced for home consumption, turned out to be the drawing board for the Gran Selezione. Cherry jam, earthiness, spices, mocha, sweet herbs and French oak all meld together in the glass. The 2006 is marked by a slightly oxidative note in its aromatics it has always shown - the result of having spent three and a half years in oak. Otherwise, the 2006 is exceptional. -AG"

"Deep garnet with a bricky rim. Extremely meaty and savoury on the nose with notes of coffee and umami. Still very oaky on the palate, grainy but smooth texture. A lot of oak sweetness on the long finish. Powerful and still a long way to go. A bit of heat at the very end. I think the Cepparello is much better value, and prefer the Chianti Classico 2014 for drinking pleasure, at the moment at least. "

2006 Isole e Olena Chianti Classico 'Gran Selezione'
Isole e Olena
80% Sangiovese
12% Cabernet Franc
8% Syrah
Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc grapes are fermented in open top
oak vats, undergoing three to four weeks of maceration. The Syrah
undergoes a short pre-fermentation cold soak in stainless steel with two
weeks of maceration before it is pressed into barrels. The Isole e
Olena Gran Selezione ages for two years in French barriques and two
years in oak casks prior to bottling.
Paolo De Marchi says, "If a producer is going to make a Gran
Selezione, it should at least be a new, different wine. It shouldn't just be
a former Chianti Classico Riserva that's had an extra six months ageing,
or a wine that used to be labelled as an IGT."
2006 Vintage
2006 was an outstanding vintage in Tuscany, with perfect fall
weather conditions including long, sunny days and cool nights which
allowed tannins to ripen well and encouraged development of the
aromatic qualities in the grapes.
