Foxen Winery & Vineyard, 2013 Foxen Pinot Noir La Encantada

"Cool and restrained red currant, cherry, menthol and anise scents lead to energetic and intense flavors that also retain good definition before concluding in a moderately firm, delicious and beautifully complex finale. There is a hint of warmth and the tannins are not especially refined (though more so than the Julia's) yet the complexity and persistence more than make up for it."

"A delicate, lithe wine, the 2013 Pinot Noir La Encantada Vineyard is quite attractive, although I would like to see a little more continuity and depth through the mid palate. Sweet red cherry, raspberry, mint and flowers are all nicely delineated. Drink this mid-weight, gracious Pinot over the next few years."

Foxen Vineyard & Winery

Foxen's La Encantada Pinot Noir is 100% whole berry destemmed into small, open-top fermenters with a 10-day active fermentation and manual punchdowns twice daily. The wine spends 16 months in 100% French oak (1/3 new) and is bottled without fining or filtration.

The Santa Rita Hills, north of Santa Barbara, are part of a rare transverse mountain range; they run west to east, providing an unusual direct channel for coastal fog and wind. The climate is influenced both by the ocean's chill and its moderating effects, which makes it an ideal location for Burgundian varieties. The wines from here have the potential for deep acidity and mineral tension, revealing what critics say is "California's next great terroir."
