Vinous Failla, 2013 Failla Chardonnay Chuy Sonoma Valley
"Petrol, graphite and a host of exotic, Riesling-inflected notes blossom in Failla's 2013 Chardonnay Chuy Vineyard. Butter, spice and tropical fruit are laced into an oily, viscous finish. The 2013 is intense and vivid to the core. It is also a fabulous example of this superb Chardonnay vintage." –Feb 2015
The Chuy Chardonnay is named after the vineyard manager Jesus "Chuy" Ordaz. The 50-year-old site is planted on steep slopes that rise high above Sonoma Valley and represents one of the oldest Chardonnay plantings in the US. All vines are head-trained and dry-farmed (rare for Chardonnay). The original vines on St. George rootstock are grafted to old-Wente selection creating what Failla calls their "throw-back" Chardonnay.
Ehren distinguishes this vineyard site by fermenting and aging a quarter of the wine in a uniquely designated concrete-egg, while the remainder lies sur lie in primarily neutral French oak. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
