Vinous Media Failla, 2012 Failla Chardonnay Keefer Ranch
"The generosity of 2012 comes through in the Chardonnay Keefer Ranch. Layered and expressive in the glass, the 2012 is beautifully generous and resonant from start to finish. The Keefer stands out for the way it balances a typically Russian River expression of overt fruit with lovely underlying energy." –Feb 2014
"Pure and focused, with a supple core of green apple, lemony citrus, spice, creamy oak and vanilla notes. Ends long and lingering, with a juicy core of fruit."
Stephen Tanzer Failla, 2012 Failla Chardonnay Keefer Ranch
"Light-medium bright yellow. Sexy but subdued nose offers apricot, lemon, hazelnut and spices, plus a suggestion of jasmine tea. A bit more intensely flavored than the Hudson Vineyard offering, with a touch more sweetness of fruit and attractive floral lift to its lemon and white peach flavors. Nicely perfumed, lightly saline chardonnay with a dusty, fine-grained finish showing good grip." –June 2014
Keefer Ranch fruit was whole-cluster pressed directly into concrete egg fermenters (25%) and French oak (1/3 new) for about 10 months of aging. The Keefer Ranch is the leanest of Failla's 2012 Chardonnays, with an enervated acidity balanced by leesy undertones.
Keefer Ranch is located in the headwaters of Green Valley Creek, with a gently-sloping, well-drained, south-facing exposure. Green Valley is one of the smallest appellations in Sonoma County, situated in the southwestern part of Russian River Valley. Defined by fog, Green Valley is the first place where the fog comes in and the last place where it burns off, making it the coolest, foggiest part of the Russian River Valley.
