Wine Advocate
Dominio de Eguren, 2013 Bodegas Teso La Monja Almirez

"Even more powerful and rich is the 2013 Almirez, an opaque purple wine made from 100% Tinta de Toro from vineyards planted at 2,300 feet (the highest in all of Toro). The wine has a fabulous opaque purple color, notes of blackberry, blueberry and cassis, licorice, graphite and truffle. Deep, rich, full-bodied and powerful with moderate tannin, this wine was aged 12 months in about 30% new French oak. Drink it over the next decade.

Teso la Monja is a rather large winery and vineyard space in Toro (321 acres of primarily north-facing vineyards) planted in sandy soils with gravel and underlying clay. The vineyards are old, dating from 1880-1940. The two wines I tasted that qualified as values are both outstanding."

Region of Origin: D.O. Toro

Grape Varietal: 100% Tinta de Toro

Location: The sandy soils of this region once inhibited the growth of phylloxera that devastated so many winegrowing regions throughout the world.

Vineyard: The soils which are rich in organic materials along with the unique conditions of the land make it possible to harvest the grapes for this wine from 30 year-old ungrafted Tinta de Toro vines, head-trained in goblet and planted at a density of 445 vines per acre. The vineyards are located in proprietary vineyards in Valdefinjas and Toro at an average altitude of 700 m (2,296 ft.). Yields are 18 Hls./Ha. Careful hand harvesting of perfectly mature clusters with good sanitary conditions and additional selection made in the winery using a sorting table.

Winemaking: Temperature controlled fermentation for 8 days and extended maceration on skins for 20 days with two pump-overs daily during the first 8 days and a light pump-over every other day after that. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel, then racked regularly every 4 months and aged for 12 months in 30% new French oak barrels.
