Burghound Domaine Barat, 2014 Barat Monts de Milieu 1er Cru
"Just like the Côte de Léchet this would be an impossible wine to miss identifying as coming from Chablis with its cool and pure aromas of tidal pool, iodine, algae and mineral reduction. As is usually the case this is the biggest wine in the range with solid volume and concentration adding size and weight to the delicious flavors that display plenty of minerality on the intense, minerally and citrus-inflected finale. This will need a few years to develop depth and better harmonize."
Fruit comes from 1.13 ha of organically-farmed, 25+ year-old vines planted on the clay and limestone soils of the Serein's right bank, adjacent to Chablis' Grand Crus. Wines from this area are generally considered to be richer and more structured than other 1er Crus.
After pressing, the juice is racked for 12 to 14 hours where malolactic fermentation takes place on the lees in temperature-controlled vats. Only indigenous yeast is used. All lots are vinified and aged in small stainless steel tanks. The wine is lightly fined before bottling.
