"This modestly priced Syrah from Bonny Doon has long been a model for other California wineries to follow out of the Syrah wilderness. It is made in an old-world style that emphasizes the earthy nuances that mirror the wines made from the same grape variety in the south of France. Winemaker Randall Grahm manages to get his grapes good and ripe without losing crucial acidity or the mineral and savory characteristics that make Syrah a star in some corners of the wine world. Then thereâÄôs the gentle kiss of white pepper spice on the finish. Beautiful." –June 2014
"This blend of grapes from four vineyardsâÄî48% Alamo Creek, 18% Bien Nacido, 18% Spanish Springs and 16% VentanaâÄîoffers dense berries and smoke on the nose as well as black pepper and tar. The tar shows strongly on the palate, as do blackberry blossoms and denser black pepper spice. -Matt Kettmann" –Dec 2015
The characteristic stoniness of the cobblestone-filled Alamo Creek is immediately apparent on the nose. The stoniness gives way to a savory meatiness.
Dedicated to producing wines in a hands-off style, Bonny Doon Vineyard sourced the Syrah from four exceptional cool-climate Central Coast growers, known for exceptional quality and meticulous vineyard management. The grapes from each vineyard were hand-harvested, sorted and fermented individually.
