WINE REVIEW
Vinous
Woodward Canyon Winery
92
"(14.6% alcohol; two-thirds of this wine is from fruit from Sagemoor Block 3, planted in 1972, with the rest of the Cabernet coming from Champoux and Sagemoor and the Petit Verdot from the estate vineyard behind the winery): Saturated bright ruby. Very rich, inviting aromas of blueberry liqueur and dark chocolate lifted by a violet topnote. Plush dark berry and spice flavors convey a lovely chocolatey sweetness, with the terrific old-vines concentration giving the wine a layered mouth feel. Finishes with substantial velvety, tooth-dusting tannins and slowly building, chocolatey length, with notes of cassis and graphite minerality arriving late. Other than the Petit Verdot, which was planted in 2001, there are no vines in this wine that were planted later than 1982. Mott finds this wine approachable already but says it should be at its best in another five or six years, after it loses some of its baby fat."
