Liquid Farm
Santa Barbara, CA, United States

Liquid Farm founders and husband-wife team Nikki and Jeff Nelson's mission is simple and compelling: To support local viticulture and honor our love for old world wines that have naturally high acidity and which are not masked by modern day manipulations.

Liquid Farm makes terroir-driven, cool-climate Chardonnay from the Sta. Rita Hills AVA in Santa Barbara County. They choose to work with vineyard sites in this area as it is home to some of the most unique and ancient Chardonnay-loving sandy loam and diatomaceous earth soils in North America. For their first three vintages (through 2012), Nikki and Jeff worked with Dragonette Cellars’ Brandon Sparks-Gillis and John Dragonette to craft their signature style. Now with Brandon as their full time winemaker, this minuscule wine project is hitting its stride.

In order to further carry out their mission, they adhere to hand-picking early, native yeast fermentations (including natural malolactic), gentle pressing, minimal to no use of oak and bottling unfined/unfiltered. Moreover, in an effort to lower their carbon footprint, they leave every bottle "naked" (no capsule) or use a soft biodegradable wax, much like beeswax. They also close all of their bottles with a biodegradable DIAM cork.

"Chardonnays from Liquid Farm are among the most impressive Sta. Rita Hills wines I tasted this year. Industry veterans Nikki and Jeff Nelson enlisted the help of Brandon Sparks-Gillis and John Dragonette of Dragonette Cellars to get their project off the ground. The initial production of just four barrels has grown into several hundred cases of top-notch Chardonnay in just a few years. The Liquid Farm Chardonnays are made in a very personal and unique style that combines fruit intensity with vibrant, pulsating minerality. Readers who have an opportunity to taste these wines should not hesitate, as they are magnificent. My sense is that things are just getting started at Liquid Farm." - Antonio Galloni (July 2014)
