PRODUCER

J. Christopher
Willamette Valley, Oregon, United States

J. Christopher is located in Oregon's Northern Willamette Valley with a small-lot of hand-crafted wines sourced from some of the best vineyards in Oregon. It specializes in Pinot Noir from the Dundee Hills made in the traditional style of Burgundy along with highly aromatic stainless steel fermented white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay that reflect the terroir and variety from which they are produced.

Jay Sommers founded the J. Christopher winery in 1996 after training with Don Kautzner at Adelsheim Vineyard in Oregon, Neil McCallum at Dry Creek Vineyard in New Zealand, and John Paul at Cameron Winery. Shortly thereafter, Jay relocated his production to his new winery in the Chehalem Mountain AVA and planted the surrounding 40 acres to massale selection Pinot Noir vines and a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc (this would become the Appassionata vineyard). All of Jays's winegrowing methods follow an old world sensibility including a strict adherence to the Thun biodynamic calendar. In the cellar, Jay eschews modern techniques such as heating up the cellar to promote malolactic fermentation, cold soaking, commercial yeasts or nutrients, pump-over or excessive racking.

Stylistically, Jay looks to the old world for his inspiration; the fresh clean and mineral wines of Sancerre and the more structured and masculine styles of red Burgundy. In particular, Jay has found inspiration from his favorite Burgundy vineyard, Chambolle Musigny "Les Amoureuses" or "The Lovers." This vineyard is famous for being a wine of power and structure, sometimes quite backward in its youth, not at all unlike its neighbor, Musigny.

Jay is also an active member of the Deep Roots Coalition, an advocacy group for dry farming. As such, all of J. Christopher's vineyards are dry farmed. While these vines naturally crop lower quantities of fruit, the quality, depth of flavor and minerality are believed to be higher.
