These Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted in 2001 to clay soil at 380 m (1,246 ft) elevation and are entirely estate grown. The Malpica winery and vineyards were started in 2001; it is today's largest vineyard in Europe with 2,500 acres of vineyard land with an additional 1,500 acres to be planted in the coming years. The wine is vinified at controlled temperatures of no more than 23C, with maceration during first stage of fermentation to extract color, aromas, and flavors. After 12 days the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and then it spends 3 months in French oak barrels before bottling.
Aromatically the wine is full of ripe red fruits, vanilla, warm pipe tobacco, and a slightly peppery note. One the palate the wine has juicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors with a hint of dried rose petals. The wine closes smooth and gently sweet, with lingering smokiness and easygoing tannins.
