Founded in 1990, Fattoria La Valentina lies on the hills overlooking Spoltore, a village nestled near Pescara on the central Adriatic coast. Abruzzo is considered a prime winegrowing region due to its topography of 2/3 mountains and hills and 1/3 coastal terrain. The region, historically known for bulk wines, has recently introduced several artisanal producers, including La Valentina, that have released top quality wines from Abruzzo’s indigenous Montepulciano and Trebbiano varieties. Current owners, Sabatino, Roberto and Andrea Di Properzio, have owned La Valentina since 1994.
Following initial and extensive viticultural research, the Di Properzio family began a quest for quality and promoting Abruzzo DOC. In 1998, they helped to achieve this goal by initiating the Binomio project with Stefano Inama and hiring Luca D’Attoma as winemaker. While taking a very traditional approach to farming and employing a variety of organic and biodynamic farming methods, La Valentina chooses to use the most current technology to ensure that the fruit’s integrity is maintained from grape to glass.

The Montepulciano wine region is located around the river Pescara and its tributaries. It is influenced by a Mediterranean climate with strong winds that help to protect vines against diseases and provide good air quality. The mountainous surface reaches around 3000 m.
The Estate Vineyards, near the Majella National Park:
Located near the Adriatic Sea, this south/southwest facing vineyard overlooks the Maiella and Gran Sasso mountains, which are over 2000 m (6600 ft) high. It is planted to 7 ha of Trebbiano and 2 ha of Montepulciano that were planted over 25 years ago on clay-based soil that – along with proximity to the sea, forest and mountains – defines the typical characteristics of the vine varieties planted here. “Spelt” and “Bellovedere” are made from this vineyard.
San Valentino in Southern Abruzzo is near the Maiella mountain, about 20 km from the winery, an area that is hot, dry and windy in summer and very cold in winter. In 1999, the winery purchased this 10-acre vineyard – approximately 400 m (1640 ft) above sea level – in a joint venture with winemaker Stefano Inama. It is planted entirely with Montepulciano and wholly dedicated to production of “Binomio.”
